LIBERIA: WEAH’S SUPPORTERS MOCK SANCTIONS IMPOSED ON THREE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS BY THE UNITED STATES

MONROVIA – Several of President George Weah‘s supporters have mocked the United States Government for imposing sanctions on three Liberian Government officials.

Minister of State Nathaniel McGill, National Port Authority Managing Director Bill Twehway, and Solicitor General Sayma Serenius Cephus were recently sanctioned by the United States Treasury Department for official corruption.

But during President Weah’s last leg of his nationwide tour in Montserrado County, some of his supporters who were marching in the streets of Monrovia sang derogatorily against the United States sanction.

“Sanction or no sanction, we will vote for you”, they chanted.

Even though the U.S. Government action is not directed at President George Weah, some of his supporters made it appear like the US was targeting their leader; with a defying chant that reverberated the streets.

They stated that no matter what the United States does-sanction or no sanction, they will re-elect George Weah as their President.

These kinds of embarrassing comments were also repeated by some talk show hosts, especially the one owned by deputy national security director Sam Siryon.

A morning show hosted on the pro-government Freedom FM radio insinuated that the United States is not law and gospel, that would bring down anyone guilty simply because it was said by them.

Mockingly the hosts of the show said: “There is also corruption in the US, Killings in the US, and all that stuff; and therefore the US would not be the one to punish Liberian Government officials simply because they are the United States.”

The radio station asked the US Government to provide all evidence pertaining to the allegations against the three Liberian Government officials.

The station is noted for besmearing opponents of George Weah.

For his part, former Charles Taylor’s official, Chief Cyril Allen, said the sanctions imposed on the three officials have no bearing on Weah’s re-election, adding that it is a fallacy that must be ignored.

The former chairman of Taylor’s National Patriotic Party (NPP) and now Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) resolutely told newsmen that the US sanction has no Bearing on Weah’s Re-election” tale.

He told reporters: “I would not have commented on this had it not been for the sick of George Weah. President George Weah will win next year’s election regardless of who is sanctioned in his inner circle.”Allen indicated that the actions of the three suspended officials were of their own making and not the government — “so it has nothing to do with the President’s election.” Courtesy: Smart News Liberia
