Monrovia – Dr. Daniel E. Cassell, the political leader of a newly established political party, the “People’s Liberation Party” is capitalizing on Liberia’s fragile political environment as the 2023 general and presidential elections draw near.
Cassell who had his political institution grand opening and dedication ceremony of the PLP on February 20, 2021, has stepped up his activities with various groups, most notably by awarding scholarships and gifts to Liberians in a charm offensive for political gain, according news reports.
One example, is such that Daniel Cassell on January 8, 2021, held one-day outreach activities with the Group of 77, one of the country’s vulnerable disabled groups in commemoration of his organization’s anniversary, in which most Liberian politicians, are becoming political humanitarians . His actions followed the paths of others in the country, who rather than explain what they want to do to fix the country, have turned themselves into humanitarians overnight dishing out goodies, than explain their policies.
It is said that during the event, Cassell provided 300 bags of rice, 200 gallons of cooking oil, and 100,000 Liberian dollars to those living with disabilities, all with expected political payback from voters as he looks to 2023. The sad fact is that no one knows what Cassell’s political philosophy is, so far, or how he intends to govern the country.
It can be recalled that Rev. Kennedy Sandy, was also noted for dishing out cash to the electorates, Alex Tyler too. But pundits said Kennedy went nowhere, his party, the Liberia Transformation Party (LTP) is buried these days. “Our economy is still struggling to get back on its feet, unemployment is a major challenge and, to compound this, companies are still laying off workers, our people are still spectators in their own economy,” Cassell said recently in Monrovia, yet he has not offered any solutions on how to fix the economy.
“Our education and health systems are challenged by inadequate domestic resource allocation, limited qualified and trained workforce, and poor service delivery especially for our rural communities and the most vulnerable and physically challenged groups,” he added, however also, the newest political actor on the landscape has offered no solutions to fix these critical infrastructures and institutions.
Cassell according to sources is an American citizen. But political observers contend, so is Mr. Weah the current officeholder, a French citizen and allegedly an American citizen. Weah has neither denied nor confirmed these allegations and no institution in the country has held him accountable, as Liberian laws are against dual citizenship.
Cassell, is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Pennsylvania, USA, and licensed in New Jersey.
The ‘humanitarian politician’ says he loves the Liberian people and wants to change their lives adding, “because of the love I have for this country, that’s why God sent me back. I didn’t come back on my own. I am a servant of the Most High and I have a direct instruction from God. Whatever he tells me to do, I will do it. I have come to tell you that I feel your pains and sufferings and I will identify with all of you”.
He sees himself as a liberator also, “I have come to liberate, assist and change the lives and the conditions of the less fortunate; those who have been marginalized and disenfranchised in your own country. The disadvantages and challenges I went through, I will make sure it does not happen to those who I am connected to”, he has said.
