Senator Prince Johnson has many critics but his critics don’t mention his ethnicity when they criticize him. Same thing can be said of Charles Taylor. But it is quite easy for people to beat the entire Mandingo ethnic group because of the action of one or some of its member. The current example is that of Mouna Farhat of ANC. In her post yesterday, which has come under strong criticism, she said, “The Mandingo people starting again o.”
She went on to say in the same paragraph, “This other Mandingo man just want to bring trouble for his people. He has joined the people from Grand Gedeh to start trouble. That’s how the problem can start. The thing that Doe couldn’t finish, that Weah will finish it?”
She is making reference to Sekou Kalasco Damaro using the photo of President Doe as his profile photo. Sekou Kalasco Damaro, just like anyone of us, has the right to choose any photo as his profile photo. If such photo is considered as offensive to some, he or she can take that up with him. However, to malign the entire ethnic group for the action of one single person is cruel, ignorant, divisive and reprehensible. Even though many have condemned her action and demanded that she delete the offensive post, she has arrogantly refused to do so. This is wrong.
If Mouna Farhat was just an ordinary person, this issue might have slide under the radar but she happens to be a senior figure in the rank of ANC of Alexander Cummings. As such, she is held by a higher standard than an ordinary party supporter. She is held accountable for her misguided, ignorant, irresponsible and inflammatory statement against an entire ethnic group because of the action of one of its members. Just as the Lebanese community is not responsible for anything she does, the Mandingo community is not responsible for anything one of its member has done.
What happened in Grand Gedeh has been condemned by many of of us but no one mention the ethnicity of the perpetrators. But because Muna has no respect for the Mandingo community, she did not hesitate to malign the entire community because she has problem with one of its members.
