PHOTOS: the once majestic Hotel Africa—Virginia, Liberia

The Hotel Africa and villas is a huge structure outside the Monrovia suburb of Virginia. Built in 1979, it is Liberia’s largest hotel. It was constructed by President William R. Tolbert to host the Organisation of African Unity [OAU] conference of which he was chair. A South African company had planned to invest about US$100 million into the historic hotel in 2009, as Liberia was hosting an international women’s colloquium.
