Just when we thought Weah will spare us another political circus because our country has mobilized all efforts on the homeland to fight the killer virus, then George Weah’s obsession with power and his terminal fixation on entrenching himself even amid a viral pandemic sweeping the world and recording innumerable fatalities showed up. Political expediency would force even the wretched of souls to watch national mood before taking political actions— at least that should be the simplest requirement every leader would perform. The death sentence of Liberian democracy is at hand. This is what Weah’s nomination of new individuals at NEC says.
The circulated list of newly nominated individuals of Liberia’s foremost electoral body by Mr. Weah and the soon-to-be minted officials of that body to replace the outgoing Chairman and Commissioners strikes an interesting point that we have relentlessly push through our many commentaries on Liberia. While some elements of the Liberian public are in utter shock and grueling disbelief about the latest episode in the Liberian farce, this is nothing but everything, a conscious effort by Weah to flip the election in his favor. And it doesn’t surprise us but reveals the scale of the challenge the nation is grappling within this era of political stasis. Weah’s latest appointment reflects the consummation of plans by the government to create the condition to rig the 2020 and 2023 elections. With an NEC operating at his whims and fancies and a subservient Supreme Court pliantly loyal to his demand, Weah is all but set for a stellar finishing. Against these realities, any thought that the CDC-led government will conduct credible elections and the chronology of the trend is incidental is a sick joke and a profligate illusion.
Leon Trotsky, the brilliant Marxist revolutionary of sainted memory, defined theory as the superiority of foresight over astonishment. What we are trying to point out here is that Mr. Weah and his henchmen will do everything to consolidate power not by the popular sovereignty of the people but through shutting out the democratic space, fraudulent elections and making it very impossible to seek justice within the internal spaces of the state.
Liberia has been looted and turned into a wasteland of neocolonial capitalism. The havoc wrought on the society by Weah is revealing of national neglect and the intense level of contempt Ellen and her cabal must-have for poor and working people to have orchestrated this farce on the fatherland. Weah’s actions have angered the people, and they resolved to vote the CDC out at any electoral poll. And here comes the dubious plan Weah has reached. So, we are not astonished upon reading the list which comprises names of familiar stooges.
Consciousness is shifted by future events. As they say, history forces mankind to use a drastic solution to deal with existential threats. We are in a turbulent period, and how we settle this menace will determine the future trajectory of our nation. Liberia is on a precipice of an explosion. The path reveals it all.
