Liberia: Corrupt Culprits Cannot Investigate Corrupt Culprits

The Editor,

The entire country (Liberia) is likely still traumatized from the 14 years of uncivil war, violence and killings, but most people tend to be in denial. As a nation, we have done nothing much in implementing the recommendations of the Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Is this among reasons why corrupt, economic crimes, rape, injustices, and impunity are on the rise? Is this among reasons why social neglect, institutionalized violence, violations, tribalism, and misrule are all on the rise? Are we nearing the status of a completely dysfunctional society?

We need a sober national therapeutic judicial reflection of our past with keen programmatic attention to the youth, women, and victims towards genuine reconciliation and rehabilitation and to address the post-war national traumatic disorder.

Only a government with the genuine will and farsightedness can take up this national task; only a government devoid of war-lords and their associates can handle such urgent national call; only a government without the usual corrupt characters will have the audacity to implement this national endeavour; only in a government in which culprits are not investigating culprits; only leaders that are interested in improving the lot of the people (and not self-enrichment) will have the tenacity to take up this national cause.

The bottom line is that it starts with electing the rightful people in national leadership — people with integrity, people with demonstrated competence, people with bloodless hands, people with the requisite grassroots national orientation and international exposure, and people with the genuine interest in national reconciliation and healing, etc., etc.

The Discourse Continues!
