PHOTO ESSAY: Speaker Alex Tyler

The recent Global Witness damning report on Liberia has raised the stakes as the 2017 presidential and legislative election looms. Caught in this dragnet is a presidential candidate and Liberia’s third most powerful politician Alex Tyler who is the speaker of the Honorable House of Representatives. But who is Alex Tyler?—Alex Tyler, 52, was born on December 15, 1963 in Klay District, Bomi County Liberia, and belonged to the Unity Party up until late last year when he defected from the ruling Unity Party to formed his own Liberian People Democratic Party or LPDP, which he is expected to head as a presidential candidate. Alex Tyler assumed the speaker ship of the Honorable House of Representative on April 6, 2007, replacing Representative Edwin Snowe of Montserrado County, who was removed by his colleagues. Tyler is said to be one of Liberia’s richest men. He recently unveiled an exotic hotel in Marshall city, and did purchase more than a dozen fleet of pickup trucks for his party.
