Liberia: Sherman Warns Against Tribal And Religious Lines

Sherman Warns Against Voting On Tribal, Religious Lines

By P. Oxford Brown

ROBERTSPORT—Senatorial aspirant for Grand Cape Mount County, Cllr .Varney Sherman, urged citizens within the county to refrain from voting on the basis of tribal and religious affiliations.

Sherman made the call Tuesday when he addressed partisans of the ruling Unity Party (UP) and other supporters in Robertsport, the capital of the county.

He said the time has come for citizens to vote for people who have the vision, ability and integrity to undertake development that will improve the living standards of the people.

Cllr. Sherman attributed the backwardness of the county to the election of individuals who do not have the citizens and county at heart in terms of development. Sherman, who is also the National Chairman of the ruling Liberia’s ruling party (UP), said voting for people who give hand-outs to win vote instead of proposing policy prescriptions to advance the country is one of key factors responsible for the underdevelopment of Grand Cape Mount County and Liberia generally.

The UP Chairman spoke recently in Sinje, Garwula District Cape Mount, with Vice President Joseph N. Boakai in attendance. And this was all, before the Liberian Supreme Court suspended electioneering activities in the West African country which has suffering from the Ebola Virus Disease.
