Experienced striker Dioh Williams and young enterprising striker Seku Conneh are Liberia’s Joint World Player of the Week.
The silky forward Dioh, aged 30, helped his club Gefle remain in the Swedish Allsvenskan as they survived relegation via a hard earned 1-0 win against Ljungskile. Dioh and co ended at the 14th spot with 32 points from 30 games as Mjallby and Brommapojkarna have been relegated.
Dioh started the match and played for 68 minutes before being substituted by teammate Johan Bertilsson. Youngster Simon Lundevall was the hero as he got Gefle’s solitary goal in the crunch match on Sunday November 9 at the Stromvallen.
According to the player’s performance data, Dioh played 27 matches this season, made 22 starts, scored five goals in 1861 minutes.
With Dioh surviving top flight football in Sweden, except otherwise, he will have another Liberian for company in the Allsvenskan as silky winger Amadaiya Rennie whose club Hammarby qualified for the Allsvenskan as champions in the Superettan will also be in Sweden’s elite league.
Elsewhere, young finisher Conneh achieved the feat of Liberia’s Joint World Player of the Week due to his outstanding display which was capped with a goal for club Fortuna Sittard in a Dutch lower league fixture against RKC Waalwijk, a club that once had in its fold ex-Mighty Barrolle and Liberia Lone Star towering winger Augustus Dunbar.
Conneh, 19, was on Saturday, November 8, on the score sheet for Fortuna Sittard as they drubbed RKC Waalwijk 2-0 at the Mandemakers Stadion in the Dutch Eerste Divisie. The Voinjama born starlet netted for his side in the 54th minute as they moved to 17th spot on the log. The youngster now has five goals this season from 13 matches, with a total of 828 minutes according to the player’s performance data.
There were other Liberians in action over the weekend as well.
In Russia, mesmerizing midfielder Sekou Jabateh Oliseh was part of the starting line up as his side Kuban Krasnodar pinned Ural away 1-0 on Friday, November 7, at the Stadion Central NYJ. Sekou was deployed in the middle of the park in a trident midfield just ahead of a double pivot as his side played a tactically flexible 4-2-3-1 formation where he played just in the playmaker role behind their lone striker, the Senegalese Ibrahim Balde. Sekou who already has four goals this season, started the match and was substituted in the 80th minute for club mate Artur Tlisov for the sake of fresh legs to maintain their slender lead.
The win took Jabateh’s Kuban Krasnodar to 5th place in the Russian Premier League.
Cultured left footed winger Tonia Tisdell and club mates remain at the top of the Turkish Lig. 1, the second tier of Turkish football, after they were held at home at the Osmanli Stadi by Giaziatep BB to a grueling 2-2 draw. The pin-sized dribbler was introduced into the fray after 74 minutes for teammate Dilaver Guclu. Osmanlispor are at the top of the tree with 21 points from nine games.
Attacking jewel Herron Berrian was an unused substitute in his side Platanias 0-0 draw away to Levadiakos at the Stadio Levadias in a Greek Super League fixture. The draw took Platanias to tenth spot on the 18 teams table.
versatile defender Solomon Grimes was on the losing side as his club Nea Salamis were defeated by AEK Larnaca on match day nine of the Cypriot top flight. Solo who featured for the whole 90 minutes, was yellow carded after 34 minutes as his side are at 8th place on the log.
Resourceful midfielder Theo Lewis Weeks was on the losing side on Sunday, November 9, as his side Maritimo were frustrated away by Vitoria Setubal at the Estadio do Bonfim in Round ten of the Portuguese Primera Liga. The Brazilian Giovani got the only goal of the melee with the Liberian midfielder Theo playing the entire match.
